The Plaza Real de Toros del Puerto is pleased to present the exhibition titled Quiet Granduer. The exhibition will bring together works by the artist Marcos Terol. The show consists of a selection of his creations from the last three years and some exclusively produced for the show. The themes on this occasion are bullfighting, Andalusian folklore and the equestrian world honoring Rhe Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. All the artwork is produced with Terols characteristic brushstroke creating a striking beauty which the artist considers to be in between expressionism and classic painting.
"Painting for me is like writing my diary. My work evolves parallel to my life. I feed off my life experiences and childhood memories to respond to my cultural concerns. "
For Fernando Quiros of the Plaza Real de Toros the work of Marcos Terol was the final piece to bring together The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art performance and the Plaza Real de Toros of El Puerto de Santa María. Its art in all its senses. I was looking for an artist that encompassed the essence of the Gala and his work has achieved it and more. Everything fits now his artwork brings color, elegance and the importance the show deserves, and Marcos and his work have been the key. "
The title of the exhibition is Quiet Grandeur. The phrase is made up of an English word and a French word chosen intentionally for the British and Spanish origins of the artist and the international flavour of the bullfighting and equestrian world, often unknown to many. The title defines the size of the artwork on show and makes us aware of the beauty we can find in that which is “large".
Marcos Terol is an emerging international artist born in 1973 in Cádiz. He obtained his degree from the University of Wales and later in Madrid continued his studies of painting. Today he lives in Malaga where he works from his art studio. His pictorial work of rapid brushstroke, strong gesture and characteristic grey and black tones, is filled with expression and tension arousing in the viewer different feelings. His monochrome figures set against dark backgrounds creating dramatic atmospheric sensations.
The large format of his canvases and in some cases diptychs is part of the aesthetics of his work and could not be understood without it. He considers the diptychs as two works of art united. With these dimensions he has the freedom to paint with determination and even aggressiveness. His figures as they gain size allows him to paint them in an almost sculptural way. Terol uses photography as the source of his work either his own images or obtained from the internet and books. From the photograph he sketches with charcoal and then paints. He paints with oil on linen canvas and feels most comfortable in large format.
Part of the exhibition will show works from the collection of portraits of the bullfighter Jose Maria Manzanares one of which was acquired by the man himself. The work "El Saludo" has been brought specially from the gallery that represents the artist in Berlin, Germany. The last work of this series and created for the exhibition is "Silence is Golden”. This was the image used by the artist for the artwork that the bullfighter has. This time however he has reproduced it using golden pigments ( hence the title ) and as a diptych measuring 260cmx162cm, making it the largest painting in the show
As part of the series of Andalusian folklore, the painting "Rosa" has been brought from the gallery that represents the artist in Miami USA. This painting was exhibited in his first solo exhibition in the USA in 2014. The new work for this series and created specially for this exhibition has been "Feria - Words are Silver". This image comes from a press cutting of the 1960's of the Feria de Jerez of which the artist fell in love with. This is the third time that this image is reproduced but never in a large format and this time using silver pigments. The two previous ones are in private collections in Malaga and USA.
In 2016, the artist presented the poster of La Virgen Nueva Esperanza in Malaga and as a result of this experience he was drawn into the sacred art and Andalusian Baroque. The show will include one work of his sacred images, La Inmaculada de Benito Hita del Castillo of the church of Santa Maria Magdalena in Seville.
The rest of the exhibition is made up of seven equestrian works of art, of these three are of the Royal School of Equestrian Art two of which were created in honor of this show. The painting "Carousel" was chosen as an image of the show for its bold use of color and gesture giving it a striking presence. With the interpretation of the image and the title the artist plays with the illusion that the horse is on a carousel fairground giving it a fresh and cheerful twist.
The rest of the equestrian images were produced during the last three years. ¨Momento de Suspension "for example was exhibited in Madrid in 2015 and corresponds to his series Les Reprises in honor of classical dressage. This is the last image of this series the artist has the rest are in private collections in the USA. In all his equestrian works Terol compares the relationship of the rider and his horse with the painter and his canvas. The focus of attention is given to the figure of the horse almost canceling the rider and further enhancing the horse. The rider becomes subordinate to the horse in the same way the work of art will always be bigger than the painter.
The last two equestrian works were created especially for this exhibition and are two portraits of the “rejoneadoras” (horseback bullfighters) Monica Serrano and Lea Vicens. Two dramatic images with an almost monumental presence. The artist wanted to honor this equestrian discipline which for many is unknown.
