"THE STRUCTURE BELOW our SURFACE"
With this collection of oil paintings I wish to explore the depths of my consciousness. Working from memory I go back into time. This idea of reaching into the depths of the surface came from observing the rock formations on the coast where I live.
These cliffs originally formed by volcanic eruptions found their way to the ocean. Like the persistence of the tides, crashing of the waves and power of the winds I have created paintings as the elements have moulded the coastline. The erotion and destruction of the surface has revealed layers of structure, giving us clues of the past. With these paintings I force myself to accept my mistakes and destroy what I consider correct. I paint, splash, scratch, scrape and remove paint to gradually create a structure and the painting begins to reveal itself.
These paintings are a celebration, an explosion of patterns, with abundance of colours and multiple shapes, capturing moments of joy but also of darkness and mistery. Like when we turn our heads to see fireworks, we don’t need to know what they are celebrating to feel the joy of the moment, this is what I would like my viewers to experience.
Like scratching the surface of our personalities and seeing the life and energy underneath, I hope we can embrace this energy and understand we are more than what we see from the surface.
